What Is a Laminectomy?

A laminectomy removes a portion of the lamina, the posterior bony arch of the vertebra, to enlarge the spinal canal and relieve pressure on the compressed nerve roots. The procedure can be performed at one level or multiple levels depending on the distribution of stenosis. In cases where spinal instability is present alongside stenosis, a decompression may be combined with fusion to maintain structural integrity after the bone removal. Modern laminectomy technique can often be performed through a minimally invasive approach using tubular retractors, reducing the muscle disruption associated with traditional open decompression. The goal is not to make imaging look normal. The goal is to relieve the nerve compression that is limiting the patient's ability to walk, stand, and live with reasonable function. At POA Linwood, that functional outcome drives every recommendation.

Spinal Stenosis in Atlantic County

Atlantic County has a substantial and growing older adult population, including many retirees who have relocated from the barrier island communities to mainland towns like Linwood, Northfield, and Egg Harbor Township. This population presents with lumbar spinal stenosis at rates consistent with age-related degenerative change, and many have managed symptoms for years before pursuing surgical evaluation. The POA Linwood team sees these patients with an emphasis on honest assessment: if decompression is likely to restore meaningful walking function, we say so directly. If the patient's overall health picture or symptom distribution makes surgery a poor risk-benefit calculation, we say that too.

What to Expect at POA Linwood

  • Consultation includes functional history, neurological examination, and MRI review to confirm stenosis as the symptom source
  • Conservative options reviewed: physical therapy, epidural steroid injections, activity modification
  • Surgical planning coordinated with AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, including pre-operative clearance for patients with cardiac or pulmonary comorbidities
  • Laminectomy performed at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center; inpatient stay typically one to two nights for single or multi-level decompression
  • Post-operative physical therapy begins within days of discharge
  • Follow-up care managed at POA Linwood, eliminating the need to travel for post-surgical appointments

Decompression with or without Fusion

A laminectomy that removes bone without addressing underlying instability can occasionally produce instability at the treated level. Your surgeon will evaluate pre-operative imaging for signs of spondylolisthesis, segmental motion, or facet degeneration that would predict instability after decompression alone. When fusion is indicated alongside decompression, both procedures are performed in the same operative session. Atlantic County patients who require combined decompression and fusion benefit from the full operative infrastructure available at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Laminectomy FAQs

How long does recovery from laminectomy take?

Will I need fusion along with my laminectomy?

Can laminectomy be performed at AtlantiCare?

How long does recovery from laminectomy take?

Recovery from a single-level lumbar laminectomy typically involves one to two days in the hospital followed by a physical therapy program over six to eight weeks. Most patients return to light activity within four to six weeks. A combined decompression and fusion requires a longer recovery, with more restricted activity for three to six months depending on fusion extent and technique.

Will I need fusion along with my laminectomy?

Not necessarily. The need for fusion alongside decompression depends on whether pre-operative imaging shows instability or motion at the stenotic levels. Your surgeon will review your imaging and explain specifically whether your case warrants decompression alone or decompression combined with stabilization.

Can laminectomy be performed at AtlantiCare?

Yes. Dr. Zerbo holds surgical privileges at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic County, and Dr. Shah can coordinate operative care through appropriate facilities serving Atlantic County. Specific facility planning is discussed at your consultation.
