Disc Replacement

The spinal column, comprised of 33 vertebrae, plays a critical role in supporting the body's structure and facilitating movement. Between these vertebrae are spinal discs, which function as cushions or shock absorbers. These discs consist of a tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) and a gel-like interior (nucleus pulposus). Over time, due to aging, injuries, or wear and tear, the discs can degenerate, leading to pain and reduced mobility. When conservative treatments fail to provide relief, disc replacement surgery is a viable solution.

What is disc replacement surgery?

Disc replacement, also known as artificial disc replacement or total disc arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to address debilitating disc-related issues in the spine. The goal is to restore spinal mobility, alleviate pain, and improve a patient's overall quality of life. The freedom to live life in comfort, able to do the activities you love, is our ultimate goal.

What is the procedure?

During the procedure, the damaged disc is removed and replaced with an artificial implant designed to function as a healthy, natural disc. This approach has significant advantages over traditional spinal fusion surgery, as it preserves motion and reduces stress on adjacent spinal segments.

Disc replacement vs. spinal fusion

In many cases, disc replacement surgery can be performed, rather than spinal fusion, based on the condition of the patient. In some cases, spinal fusion in combination with disc replacement may be appropriate.

Preservation of motion

Unlike spinal fusion, which immobilizes the affected spine segment, disc replacement allows for continued motion, maintaining flexibility while reducing the advance of the degeneration of adjacent spinal areas.

Pain relief

Disc replacement effectively alleviates chronic back pain and associated symptoms, restoring both comfort and function to the spine.

Improved quality of life

Patients often experience an enhanced quality of life post-disc replacement, with increased mobility and a restored ability to enjoy the activities they love.

Faster recovery time

Recovery time after disc replacement is typically shorter compared to spinal fusion surgery, allowing patients to return to their normal routines sooner.

Who is a candidate for disc replacement surgery?

Candidates for disc replacement include the following:

  • Diagnosed with a painful, damaged disc in the lumbar (lower back) or cervical (neck) region.
  • Failed to find relief from conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, and injections.
  • Generally healthy and free from certain contraindications.

What is the recovery time after disc replacement surgery?

Recovery following disc replacement surgery varies from patient to patient. However, most individuals recover in four to six weeks. Our minimally invasive approach causes less pain, and results in less disruption to the muscles and other tissues. The incision is smaller for faster healing and smaller surgical scars. We work closely with each patient during recovery, including physical therapy to regain strength and mobility.
